When they launched a manufacturing company a few years ago, McGuff Pharmaceuticals, Inc., its success created new challenges. McGuff needed to realign their delivery service to match their expanding network of customers, particularly in rural areas. They wanted to promise guaranteed delivery within three business days and have online tracking. They also wanted to improve their cash flow with a fast and easy system for handling C.O.D. payments. When checks failed to reach the company within a week, McGuff had to determine if the driver forgot to collect the check or if the check was lost. UPS's fully integrated network and guaranteed delivery immediately improved service levels by consistently meeting a three-day delivery commitment throughout McGuff's customer network, and a two-day delivery commitment where and when it was required. The reliability of UPS and the online tracking feature greatly improved customer satisfaction and reduced customer delivery inquiries.
"With UPS, we've seen a huge improvement in shipments - packages are reliably arriving on time, even in the rural areas," Johnston said. "Our customers are ecstatic."
To address check processing costs, UPS introduced McGuff to UPS Capital's C.O.D. Automatic1 service. After the driver delivers the package and collects a check, the check is deposited and electronically transferred directly into McGuff's bank account within two to three business days after delivery.
"Checks are now processed within days of delivery instead of after a week or more," Johnston said.
UPS Capital also provided McGuff with electronic access to their UPS C.O.D. remittance statements. The statement includes both the dollar amounts of the checks deposited and images of the actual checks. In addition, UPS Capital tailored the data of the statements and activity summaries to provide separate remittance information for each of McGuff's business divisions. McGuff now enjoys reliable, time-definite delivery and a stronger cash flow, while saving significant time in customer service and the accounting process.
"We used to spend a great deal of time tracking down packages and checks and manually processing payments," Johnston said. "UPS brought consistency and automation to our operations so we have more time to devote to our customers."
